Unbeaten Pierro Heats Up The Valley
Undefeated 3 year old colt Pierro has taken another step towards his Cox Plate assault with an effortless win under lights at Moonee Valley on Friday night in the Group 2 Stutts Stakes.
The $1.08 unbackable favourite won $133,000 for what was no more than a 90 second track gallop, as he destroyed the opposition by almost 5 lengths and took his record to 8 wins from 8 starts.
Even though the horses behind him weren't the top class 3 year olds of the Spring, the way he handled the Valley track and the ease of the victory put any doubt to whether the son of Lohnro deserved his Cox Plate favouritism.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse was her usual lively self when interviewed after the race. "He is just such an exciting colt. It was just a galloping lesson,", she said.
"We are privileged to see a colt as good as this".
Winning jockey Nash Rawiller tested his star mount in the final straight, pushing him to accelerate in the closing stages. He tore away from the field to beat $61 roughie Carringbush Jack by some 4.75 lengths with Jimando back in third, more than 7 lengths away.
"He's such an adaptable horse, he took the first turn like he had been around it 100 times," Rawiller said. "That's what makes him as good as he is, he just adapts to situations."
"I wanted it to be as soft as possible but still get a job done. He'll get a bit of improvement out of this."
Punters agree with Pierro now a $1.60 favourite for the Caulfield Guineas and $3.50 favourite for the Cox Plate.
