Underrated Turnball Runner Finds Happy Trail

The $11,000 gelding Happy Trails has upset some of Australia's best racehorses, winning the Group 1 Turnball Stakes in a victory reminiscent of his Emirate Stakes win last Spring.

Starting a $31 outsider, Happy Trails ducked and weaved through the pack to surge past Puissance De Lune and win by a short neck. Lloyd Williams only runner, Fawkner, loomed up to win and ran strongly into third placing.

Two of the main pre-race contenders, Fiorente and Hawkspur, had their share or problems in the straight, but their late sectionals were very impressive, and saw them finish fourth and fifth respectively.

Jetaway put in a very nice first up run, working to the line nicely to finish only 1.9 lengths behind the winner.

But all honours went to Happy Trails, who has now earnt over $1.5 million in prizemoney.

"He's such a magnificent horse. He's like a brother or a son," trainer Paul Beshara said of Happy Trails after the win.

It was surprising Happy Trails started such long odds. Two weeks prior in the Underwood, he finished only 1 length behind It's A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel, arguably the 2 best horses in the country. Either of these would have been favourite had they run.

Beshara was equally surprised. "I couldn't believe the price he went out at. He's been always underrated".

He now moves on to the Cox Plate where he will tackle the Deel and the Jewel again, as well as the 2nd to 5th placings in Saturday's race. It will make for an amazing battle.

One thing's for sure. Happy Trails will not be taken lightly!
